Tallest wind turbine to be built in Northumberland
Local councillors in Northumberland are set to grant planning permission for a new wind farm which includes the tallest turbine in the UK, it has emerged.
The development will produce enough renewable energy to power 11,600 homes when completed and consists of seven turbines, most of which stand at 125 metres tall, 24dash.com reports.
However, one turbine will tower above its neighbours and is due to measure 163 metres in total. This is three times the height of Nelson's Column and will give the Blyth Harbour development a dramatic appearance as it stretches into the North Sea.
The development will replace an existing collection of smaller turbines which have been operating in the area since 1993.
Approximately ten per cent of Northumberland's target for renewable energy generation will be met by the new wind farm.
Plans for a new wind farm in Stirling's Carron Valley were recently given the green light by local planning officials, the BBC reported last week.
