Hydrogen-powered VW unveiled in LA
A hydrogen-powered Volkswagen is to be unveiled at the Los Angeles auto show later this month.
The VW Lingyu, a hydrogen vehicle based on the Passat and manufactured in Shanghai, will be showcased on November 21st to 30th.
As a hydrogen vehicle, the Lingyu has zero emissions and uses a fifth generation fuel-cell which allows the car to travel more than 300 kilometres without re-charging.
The Lingyu uses a powertrain developed with Shanghai VW parent SAIC, Tongji University and Shanghai Shen-Li High Tech.
It is said to reach a top speed of 150 kilometres per hour while discharging only water.
The Lingyu was showcased at the Beijing Olympics alongside the Chevy Equinox FCV, which was also developed by SIAC.
Meanwhile, the US automotive industry has asked the federal government for financial assistance as it has seen sales plummet as a result of the financial difficulties.
General Motors and Chrysler have not sent senior executives to the Los Angeles show, reports the Wall Street Journal.
