US plans climate conference in January
The United States is to hold a climate conference with major greenhouse gas emitting nations in January.
James Connaughton, chairman of the White House Council on Environmental Quality, speaking in Washington on Wednesday, said that Japan, China and other major greenhouse gas emitting countries will be asked to attend the conference in Hawaii from January 30th.
Discussions will build on the achievements of the UN climate conference in Bali, Indonesia, last week, Mr Connaughton said.
The US also plans to hold a top-level meeting of key nations next summer.
At a press briefing on Bali island last week, Mr Connaughton said that the US would lead on climate change but that leadership demanded others fall in line and follow.
Yu Qingtai, China's special representative for climate change, recently said that developing nations have a "basic common position" regarding global warming - they should focus on improving their domestic energy efficiency, while richer countries like the US lead international developments.
