Eco-homes to be built on former coalfield in Wigan

19 December 2007

A former coalfield site in Greater Manchester is set to become a zero carbon housing development.

Bickershaw in Wigan will pioneer zero carbon homes as part of the Carbon Challenge run by national regeneration agency English Partnerships.

Some 650 new eco-friendly homes will be built on the former colliery, currently owned by the Northwest Regional Development Agency (NWDA).

Jayne Lomas, English Partnership's project manager for the Carbon Challenge, said: "This is an exciting opportunity for both Bickershaw and English Partnerships."

Peter White, NWDA executive director, said that the region was "leading the way" in tackling climate change.

"This is a major project for the area which will create new jobs and leisure facilities, as well as creating a significant number of new homes," he stated.

Manchester city council intends to make the city one of the UK's 'greenest' locations.

Bickershaw ceased functioning as a mine in 1992.
